Today in class we finished your blue packets and turned them in! We also started watching the movie 'Glory Road' and filled out the answer sheet.

Next class period (Wednesday May 20) you will have your in class final.  You may also turn in your CAP Points. I will sign your graduation forms Friday (May 22)

DEBATE QUESTIONS

How will you improve the environment?
2. How will you protect the US from terrorism abroad?
3. What will you do to improve the education system in the US?
4. What is your position on affordable healthcare?
5. How will you restore confidence in the presidency?

Each group can prepare questions to ask the Candidates during the debate (Town Hall style)

Today in class:

The Presidential candidates gave their 20 second speeches

We watched the debates from the Republican party candidates, Independent party candidates, and finally Romney & Obama ***if you were absent, you will need to fill out the notes on pages 9-10 in your pink packets (the websites to watch the debates are in your packet)

Next class period we will have our class debates, watch campaign ads, and vote for the Presidential candidate!

HOMEWORK: if you haven't emailed me your videos you MUST do so before May 6th (kayliw@provo.edu) and PAGE 7 of your pink packets is homework!!!!

Today in class: We had our candidate Meet & Greet

You made a slogan and created a poster for your candidate

We finished page 4-5 watching campaign ads- if you were absent I want you to watch an Obama ad, a Romney ad, GW Bush ad, and a Clinton ad.  As you watch these ads answer the questions in your packet.

Next class period we will be filming 2 30-second ads (1 positive, 1 negative) for your candidates, make sure at least 1 person in your group has either a phone or a camera to record them.  If you are planning on using an props, make sure that you bring them as well.  Thursday will be the only class period to work on them!

1. Turned in your Unit 5 Packet (all filled out + learning targets) with the 10 Best/5 Worst Presidents
2. Took POTUS quiz
3. Worked in election groups- If you were absent on Tuesday you need to bring the following

  • Google the article "10 winning Campaign Slogans" read through the article and answer questions 1-2 on page 3 of your pink packet 
  • Write a Short Biography on your candidate; you can either use yourself or a fictional person that you made up; some information to include would be your age, spouse, years married, years residing in a district, names and ages of children, # of grandchildren, education: HS, College, etc., Jobs and titles, Church name and positions, club/organizations + positions, Civic involvement, Awards/honors, Military background, elected offices held, other important information

Today in class we finished up your Executive Branch Packets!!! (make sure that you have your Learning Target Guide filled out)

**** You will also have a QUIZ over pages 1-6 of your POTUS notes. 

We started our new packets "Election Packets" come in and grab one during intervention so you can catch up on the notes! We filled out page 1 of your notes and completed the activity on page 2 :) 

I also placed you in your election groups- if you were absent you will find out what your groups are on Friday.

Today in class: We went to the elementary school and read your books on a bill becoming a law; the kids absolutely loved it so great job!

*Make sure that you have turned these books in- if you were absent to make this up you will need to read your book to an elementary age child and bring me a note saying that you did.

Thursday (March 26) we will be going to Timpanogos Elementary school where you will read your book about a bill becoming a law to a child.  You MUST bring your books (unless you have turned them into me) and you MUST be on time! 1st period will leave at 8:05, and 7th period will leave at 1:00.

Finished up your House of Reps + Senate notes (pages 3-4 in packet)

Introduced your project for this term! Info on page 8, ideas for project page 7.  We worked on this in class, and will have all of Tuesday to work in class. You will be presenting to the class on April 1. I suggest that you use this weekend to gather the information you will need, so Tuesday you can put your presentation together.

Today: We made our new packets! For this unit we will be learning about the Legislative Branch of Government. We went over how a bill becomes a law and you all wrote your own bills and turned them into me at the end of class. If you were absent, you will need to turn this in (directions on page 5 of your packet)

On Wednesday the 18th you will have your quiz.  Using the pink page in your packet (page 12) you will be researching important figures in our government. Start working on this for homework.   I will show you their picture and you will need to tell me their full name, party, title, and body of Congress.
For example if I show you this picture you would tell me:

Today in class: 
We made our Unit 3 packet "The Constitution" and completed the Electoral College activity and the Electoral College Debate- in order to do this you will need a Gov book.  You may either come to intervention! or check a book out from the Library.

I also introduced your project for this unit- the Amendments photo essay.  This will be Due March 5

Homework: type a one-page (2 paragraph, 5 sentences in each paragraph) summarizing both sides of the electoral college debate.  State which side has the best arguments and why.  Due next class!

In Class:  we learned about the Federalists and Anti-Federalists- you will need to fill out the notes from the PowerPoint on these pages.

We also read through historical documents to understand what type of government Federalists would like and what type of government Anti-Federalists would like.  Read through Document A and Document B by Hamilton and Melancton Smith.  Once you have read through these documents, fill out the rubric on the back side.

Your Rough Draft for your paper were due today! If you were absent your rough draft as well as final draft will be due on Thursday the 19th.

In class: We watched more of 'A more Perfect Union' and started talking about slavery in the constitution; we filled out Slavery grievance page in your packet (once you have read it, answer questions 1,2,3)  We also filled out the rubric on the back; if you were absent you will need to come in during intervention to fill out the rubric!

Your rough drafts were due today!.... however, I have decided to extend the deadline a bit, the rough draft will be due in class next Tuesday the 17th, and your final paper will be due Thursday the 19th!

Today in class we.... 

Corrected Unit 1 Test- I will hand these back next class period, you will have until the next test to do your test corrections! (make sure you read through the disclosure amendments, so that you understand how to do your test corrections!)

We watched our class video :) Great job! We also started talking about the constitutional convention the 2 issues that were discussed were Representation, and Slavery; we did a simulation of the meeting that took place in Phili! If you were absent you will need to write me a 1 page double spaced, 12 pt. font summary of the issues discussed, and the outcome of the meeting. This will be due the day of the test!

No homework or journal today.

In class: Today in class we reviewed the 5 basic concepts of Democracy.  We learned about the rule of law and filled that sheet out in your packet! Use the PowerPoint to help you. We also broke into groups..... because we are making a MOVIE :) We will be filming on Tuesday so make sure you are here and you don't let your group down! If you were absent I will assign you a group so you can practice with them on Tuesday before filming.

Homework: Choose 1 of the "rule of law" principles and find a current (within 10 years) in or out of the United States example of how that law was violated.  Write a one paragraph summary; this can be hand written or typed.  Please include the link of where you found your information!

Journal: What actions do you relate to Democracy?

In Class: Today in class you received your late passes for the semester. If you lose them, they are gone I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MORE. We reviewed the different types of Government *make sure you know THEM ALL... they will be on your test. We also filled out the "Forms of Government" page in your packet (use the PowerPoint) We also filled out the Soils of Democracy and Basic Concepts of Democracy pages in your packet- in order to do this you will need to check out a book from the Library.

Homework: Fill out Day 4 Learning Target- only the first one, you can cross out the second one. If you didn't finish any of the pages from the packet, these will also be homework.

Journal: What makes a law fair or unfair?

IN CLASS: We talked about the origins of government, AND the different forms of government; we filled out these 2 sections on your note guide using the powerpoint.
We also discussed the Human Predicament (we will review in class next time)

Homework: Answer the question in your packet "Which would you prefer to live under- tyranny, or anarchy? Why?" *this question is found under the types of government rubric in your packet. We will be discussing this next time. If you did not finish your Learning Target for Day 3 in class- this is also homework.

  • Completed the Human Nature and Student Nature of your note packet (first page) 



  • We started page 2 of your note packet discussing what what GOVERNMENT, STATE, and SOVEREIGNTY mean and the 4 purposes of Government. To fill this out, you will find the PowerPoint under Unit 1 Tab use slides #8-13.  Fill out Day 2 Learning Target 

  • We also formed a class government, and made changes to your disclosure document- these changes can be found under the Unit 1 tab, or by clicking on this Link we will go over these in class on Friday. 

HOMEWORK     If you did not finish the packet pages or Day 2 Learning Target in class, this is homework! You also need to research 2 different forms of government and an example of each; be prepared to share with the class. YOUR DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT IS DUE NEXT TIME!
