In Class: Today we wrapped up Amendment 6 & 7 looking at the reliability of eye witness testimony.  Next class (Thursday) I won't be here so you will be working with your group on your presentation (last blue page in packet) and will present this on Monday the 16th :)

Homework: CAP POINTS!!!! Please get these projects completed and turned into me ASAP! If possible bring them by Thursday and put them in the black turn in basket by my desk; if you want to physically hand me your projects bring them to me on Friday!

In Class: Today we went over the art of speech--- focusing on PATHOS, ETHOS, LOGOS :) You chose 2 speakers to listen to (comedian, TED talk, teacher, politician etc) and graded them on their use of the 3 pieces of rhetoric

Homework: If you didn't finish listening to the speeches in class, make sure it's finished and ready to go by Friday :)

In Class: Today we started our new unit "POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION"; Today you took a political personality quiz to learn more about your belief system and the conservative/liberal agenda (yellow + green pages) if you don't finish, this will be homework!

Homework: You were also given a homework assignment: Interview 1 Republican and 1 Democrat--- this is NOT a debate.  You are simply asking questions and writing down answers :) This needs to be finished on MONDAY OCTOBER 28TH!

In Class: Today we wrapped up the Judicial Branch with our discussion on the Supreme Court and their decision on Flag Burning (free speech v. protection of the flag)

We also talked through the Legislative Branch looking at the best approach to representation
TRUSTEE V. DELEGATE (blue pages in your packet)

We will finish up with the Executive Branch on Monday (purple pages) and turn your packets in! This will be the final thing on your grade for TERM 1.

YOUR CAP POINTS ARE DUE TOMORROW AT 2:15... NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

CAP POINTS DESCRIPTION: 


Each of the C.A.P. write ups must be typed and turned in when required. The page requirements for each category are complete pages, not half or three quarter pages (unless specifically noted as a half page write up). All pages should be Times New Roman Font, size 12, double spaced.  Write ups should be headed properly with YOUR NAME, the C.A.P. CATEGORY, DATE OF THE EVENT and DATE WHEN THE C.A.P WAS COMPLETED. 
CAP IDEAS                
1. PUBLIC MEETING OF GOVERNING BODY (60 Points)
In order to fulfill this requirement, I recommend you attend a city council meeting for either Provo or Orem.   However, you may also attend any public meeting, such as planning and zoning or school board meeting. Write a 1 page summary of the meeting.  This paper must include the following: what public meeting you attended, where it was held, date and time of attendance.  The body of the paper should include issues discussed and solutions or recommendations made at the meeting.  Be sure to include a conclusion, discussing your personal opinions and observations from the issues discussed and the meeting in general.
2. MAGAZINE NEWS ARTICLE (20 points)
Read a magazine article from a periodical like Time, U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, etc. or an on-line news source.  Choose an article that focuses on a national or international issue relating to government.  Write a 1 page summary about the article. The summary must include the following: Citation, an overview of the issue and an evaluation. The evaluation should include your opinion and reaction to the topic and its effect on society.
3. TV NEWS PROGRAM (30 points)
In order to fulfill this requirement you must watch any one of the following programs:                
Nightline                                                              Situation Room
O’Reiley Factor                                                          Meet the Press
Hannity                                                                       CNN
Anderson Cooper 360°                                    Hardball w/ Chris Matthews
Politics Nation                                                 Rachel Maddow Show
Take notes on what you observe and hear.  Include your hand written notes with your paper.  Write a 1 page summary of the major issues discussed during the program.  Your summary must include:  The date and the title of the program that you watched, summary of the issues, and your personal opinion/reaction.
4.  WRITE A LETTER TO A POLITICAL LEADER
(member of the U.S. Congress or a State Legislator) (30 points)
Express your views, opinions, or questions on a political subject.  The letter must be at least 1 page in length and relevant to the person you are sending it to.  Make a copy of your letter and turn it in for credit.    Please share with the class any responses you may receive.
5.   POLITICAL VOLUNTEERISM (50 points)
Choose a candidate or issue you support and perform at least 1.5 hours of volunteer work. Work may include distributing leaflets, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, door knocking or a variety of other activities.  To get credit you must get a signed note from a supervisor indicating the date and time spent along with the type of work done. You must also type a 1/2 page description of the candidate or issue you chose with a description of the specific task you helped with.
6.  POLITICAL RALLY (50 points)
Attend a political rally, speaker or meeting.  Write a 1 page summary of the event including your opinion and/or what you learned. 
7. JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE (60 points)
Attend either Youth Court (times and locations to be announced) or Magistrate Court. Write a summary that includes an evaluation of the proceedings (how things work) and a summary of each case observed. Also include an opinion of the effectiveness of the system. The write up must be a minimum of 1 ½ pages in length.
                        **You may NOT be personally involved in the case.**

8. REGISTER & VOTE (50 points)

Democracy revolves around the right to vote.  Too many Americans choose not to exercise that right. For those of you who are 18 years old at the time of any local, state or national election; voting will count as a category for you.  You must get a note signed by one of the election officials at the polling place.  It should include their name (written legibly) and the location where you voted.  You must also write a ONE page summary describing the voting process.  What did you experience at the polling place?  Also, how do you think the actual voting process could be done more effectively?

In Class: Today I introduced your next project!!!


You will soon be giving a lesson on part of the constitution to a group of elementary school students.
Your job will be to become an expert on your given topic, and then to PREPARE and DELIVER a lesson on that material.
Make sure your lesson answers the two provided questions.
Anything else you cover in your lesson and any way to convey the material is entirely up to you and your group, provided you strive to help the elementary school students to be active participants in your lesson.

In Class: Today you took a quiz over government systems (if you were absent, come see me when you return)

We also looked at Economic Systems---- you filled out page 17 (yellow sheet in your packet) if you were absent you may get these notes from a friend OR go through the PowerPoint found under the Unit 1 tab (right side of the blog)

You also selected 2 economic systems and researched the pros/cons of each system

Homework: Get thinking about your CAP points! You need to have 100 points finished by OCTOBER 11.  You may look at my list of ideas found under course documents or you may propose your own ideas to me :)

A schoolboard meeting is coming up on September 19th here at PHS at 7:00pm that you may attend and do a write-up for 60 points

1. Write down 3 reasons why people typically seek relationships
2. Write down 3 reasons for ENDING a relationship
3. In 3-5 steps, explain what the ideal break-up would look like

In Class: Today we looked at the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE as the ultimate break up letter--- in a nutshell

  1. Declare the reasons for any relationship.
  2. Explain the right of both parties to end the relationship if said reasons are not being met.
  3. Make your ex look like literal Satan.
  4. Declare your freedom.

    You compared Jefferson's words and rewrote them in form of a break up (purple page in your packet) as well as the reflection questions !

    Homework: Make sure the purple page is finished by Friday & do a review of the Philosophers we've covered up to this point: 
    Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Jefferson

    In Class: Today we wrapped up our Enlightenment Philosophers and had a quick quiz to check your understanding of views on the state of nature and social contract.  You worked with a partner to define some words (used by Thomas Jefferson) that we will be dissecting next class period!

    Homework: REVIEW the philosophers we've discussed in class! Make sure that you can describe what (HOBBES, LOCKE, MONTESQUIEU, ROUSSEAU) would say about the state of nature and the social contract ie. restrictions/rules

    Journal: Choose classroom/school rules and explain how Thomas Hobbes would interpret these rules.

    In class: Today we finished up our discussion on the Enlightenment Philosophers theories of government; specifically STATE OF NATURE & THE SOCIAL CONTRACT. These are key components for each philosopher, however their interpretations vary significantly! You finished up the green pages in your packet (11-12) including the reflection. 

    Make sure you understand each Philosophers stance on state of nature & the social contract!

    Homework: If you weren't able to finish the reflection page in your packet complete it by Friday! Also I really encourage you to do a quick review each night (5-10 min) on Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu.

    Journal: You looked at different quotes from Philosophers about HUMAN NATURE and chose the one that speaks to your soul.  If you were absent you can look at these quotes when you return!

    In Class: Today we started discussing the Philosophers (Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu) You took the personality quiz on pgs. 9-10 and answered the questions about 'student nature' on page 9.  We discussed the STATE OF NATURE as well as SOCIAL CONTRACT. You must define both of these (pg. 10 green sheet)

    We focused on Thomas Hobbes today and his interpretation of a LEVIATHAN.  You read an excerpt from his book Leviathan and answered the 2 questions that followed

    1. How doe Hobbes describe life in life without government (state of nature) 
    2. How does Hobbes describe the ideal government (the social contract) 

    If you are still a bit lost when it comes to Hobbes and how he viewed Human Nature, watch the video below :) 

    Homework: If you were unable to finish the Leviathan reading- this needs to be completed before our next class :)

    In Class: Today we began our Political Philosophy discussion beginning with Machiavelli.  You were put in charge of a nation and answered a series of questions regarding your personal policy on leadership. (Peach pages in packet pgs. 3-6; 20 questions total).  We will finish this up on Thursday!

    Homework: If you didn't finish answering the leadership questions, please finish that up by Thursday! Also starting thinking of 'Princes' in the media, fiction, the school :)

    It was so wonderful meeting all of you today; I know today was a little.... boring.... but we all go through it and hopefully you understand what this class is all about and what is expected of you!
